Lesson Philosophies
A Musician:
- is proficient in reading music
- understands proper maintenance and care for their instruments
- possesses the drive to perfect their technique by practicing rigorously
The Orchestral Percussionist:
- is fundamentally sound in snare drum rudiments and techniques
- is proficient in playing scales on mallet instruments
- can play a wide range of standard literature on all the standard instruments
The Rudimental Percussionist:
- has firm control over his/her drumsticks (eg. heights, dynamics, sound quality)
- can play a multitude of roll and sticking patterns, and can even create new ones
- has the ability to listen, to adjust, and to play within an ensemble
The Drumset Player:
- has an immaculate sense of time
- has good posture
- has at the very least a general sense of ALL OF THE ABOVE.
As you can see, each of these genres has similar general qualities. They all deal with good time, good control, and the ability to adapt (with practicing or playing situations). These are my main goals for my students - no less. To accomplish this however takes a student that loves what he/she does, and is willing to put the time and effort in to progress in the art of percussion.
